Why Packaging Matters in Rice Export
Packaging is not just about holding the rice. It determines shelf life, retail presentation, freight efficiency, and regulatory compliance. A container of premium 1121 Basmati packed in plain PP woven bags for the GCC retail market will not sell. The same rice in BOPP laminated bags with Arabic and English labeling, a clear window showing the grain, and a convenient carry handle will move off shelves.
Pakistan rice exporters offer a range of packaging options. The right choice depends on three factors: target market expectations, distribution channel (retail vs wholesale vs food service), and buyer's brand strategy (private label vs exporter's brand).
Packaging Types Compared
| Type | Material | Common Sizes | Best For | Cost (per bag, approx.) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PP Woven | Polypropylene woven fabric with inner poly liner | 25 kg, 50 kg | Bulk wholesale, food processing, animal feed | $0.30-$0.50 |
| BOPP Laminated | PP woven with printed BOPP film lamination | 1 kg, 2 kg, 5 kg, 10 kg, 25 kg | Retail, private label, supermarket | $0.15-$0.80 |
| Non-Woven | Bonded polypropylene fabric, premium feel | 5 kg, 10 kg | Premium retail, gift packs, GCC market | $0.40-$0.90 |
| Jute | Natural jute fiber | 50 kg, 100 kg | Traditional markets, some African destinations | $0.80-$1.20 |
| Standup Pouch | Multi-layer laminate with zipper reseal | 1 kg, 2 kg, 5 kg | Premium retail, specialty stores, EU/USA | $0.25-$0.60 |
| Vacuum Pack | Nylon/PE vacuum-sealed brick | 1 kg, 2 kg, 5 kg | Long shelf life, aged rice, export to humid climates | $0.20-$0.45 |
Packaging by Market
Different markets have different expectations. Here is what works where:
GCC (UAE, Saudi Arabia, Iraq): The GCC is a retail-driven market. Consumers buy rice in 2 kg, 5 kg, and 10 kg packs from supermarkets. BOPP laminated bags with full-color printing, a clear grain window, and Arabic/English text are standard. Non-woven fabric bags are growing for premium positioning. The 1 kg standup pouch is popular in UAE hypermarkets. Bags must show ESMA/SFDA registration numbers.
East Africa (Kenya, Tanzania): Wholesale distribution dominates. Most rice is sold in 25 kg and 50 kg PP woven bags from wholesale shops. Some brands use BOPP laminated 2 kg and 5 kg bags for supermarket distribution in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam. Bags require KEBS/TBS mark and must show weight in metric units.
West Africa (Senegal, Ghana, Cameroon): The 50 kg PP woven bag is the standard format. West African importers buy in bulk and repack locally. Some brands export in 25 kg BOPP bags for direct retail. Packaging must meet destination country regulatory requirements and display applicable compliance marks.
Europe (UK, EU): Retail packs of 1 kg, 2 kg, and 5 kg dominate. Standup pouches and BOPP laminated bags with premium design are expected. Packaging must comply with EU food contact material regulations. Labeling must include nutritional information per EU 1169/2011, allergen declaration, lot number, best-before date, and country of origin. Plastic packaging is increasingly subject to recycling levies.
USA: Similar to EU requirements. FDA registration and FSVP compliance required. Nutritional facts panel in FDA format. Standup pouches and BOPP bags in 2 lb, 5 lb, and 10 lb sizes (not metric). UPC barcode required for retail distribution.
Private Label and Custom Packaging
HAS Rice offers full private label packaging services. The buyer provides their brand design (or we design it with our in-house team), and we print and pack under their brand. Here are the key parameters:

|---|---|
| BOPP Laminated | 15,000 bags |
| Non-Woven | 5,000 bags |
| Standup Pouches | 20,000 pouches |
Minimum bag size for custom printing: 5 kg.

Design requirements: Artwork in AI or PDF format, minimum 300 DPI for images, CMYK color mode. We provide bag templates with dimensions for each size. A proof is sent digitally and a physical sample bag produced for buyer approval before mass printing.
Container Loading and Packing Efficiency
| Bag Size | Bags per 20' FCL | Net Weight per FCL | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50 kg PP Woven | 500-540 | 25.0-27.0 MT | Standard bulk packing |
| 25 kg PP/BOPP | 1,000-1,080 | 25.0-27.0 MT | Stacked on pallets or floor-loaded |
| 10 kg BOPP/Non-Woven | 2,400-2,600 | 24.0-26.0 MT | Often palletized for retail |
| 5 kg BOPP/Non-Woven | 4,800-5,200 | 24.0-26.0 MT | Ready for supermarkets or wholesale distribution |
Smaller retail packs require outer cartons, which take up more space and reduce the net weight per container. A 20' FCL of 50 kg bags holds up to 27 MT net. The same container with 5 kg bags in cartons may hold only 24 MT net due to carton volume. This affects the per-kg freight cost. Buyers should factor this into their cost calculations when comparing bulk vs retail pack pricing.
Packaging and Shelf Life
Standard PP woven and BOPP bags provide 12-18 months shelf life in a cool, dry environment. Vacuum packing extends shelf life to 24-36 months by removing oxygen and preventing oxidation. Vacuum packing is recommended for aged basmati rice (which is stored for 12-24 months before export) and for shipments to humid tropical markets where insect activity is a concern.
Smaller retail packaging (5 kg and 10 kg bags) includes an inner poly liner (polyethylene) that creates a moisture barrier. This is critical for ocean shipments where containers experience temperature fluctuations that can cause condensation (container sweat). The poly liner prevents moisture from reaching the rice. Bulk bags (25 kg and 50 kg) do not include an inner poly liner by default. Buyers can request a poly liner for bulk bags at an additional cost.
